Cashback versus rakeback
Cashback is calculated on net losses over a period, commonly a week: lose $1,000 net with a 10% weekly cashback and you receive $100. If you finish the period in profit you get nothing. Rakeback, a term borrowed from poker, is calculated on activity - your wagers, or the house edge on them - so it pays out even in a winning week. Operators use the two names loosely, so read how the amount is calculated.
What to check
- The percentage, and exactly what it is a percentage of: net losses, total wagers or house edge.
- How often it is paid, and whether it arrives automatically or must be claimed.
- Whether it carries a wagering requirement, or is paid as withdrawable cash.
- Caps on the amount per week or month.
- Which games count, as sports, esports and some game types are often excluded.
- VIP or level requirements: the best rates are usually for higher tiers.
A cushion, not a strategy
Cashback and rakeback reduce the cost of playing, but they do not turn a game with a house edge into one you can beat. Do not raise your stakes to earn more of it.
